Scholars and researchers should not be concerned with whether their work makes a contribution to the larger society. It is more important that they pursue their individual interests, however unusual or idiosyncratic those interests may seem.

Many people argue that scholars and researchers should try their effort to study the issues that may contribute most to the human society rather than select the research topics by their own interest. This statement seems rational at first glance, however, an precarious situation has been appeared from the different identifications of "contribution". That is because different people have different comprehensions toward the standard of this term. In my opinion, providing the scholars with the opportunity to select the research fields should benefit the evolution of human world in the long run.

First of all, it is true that there are some research results that could do directly contribution to the human society. No one can deny that there are some realms of research that have been made for the purpose of solving the current social problem that existed in the contemporary human society. In this era of rapid social and technology change leading to the emergence of various unprecedented menace to human existence, many efforts and probes, even some nascent diciplines, have been introduced to dimish these threatens. For instance, 污染。

However, by considering the primary purpose of science and technology, almost all the research fields would have positive effects toward human society in the long run. As was so often pointed out, the research works, whether it has been regarded good or evil at temporary age, all aimed at helping people to get a better understanding of the unknown world. These activities more or less contributed to propel the movement of human society. The famous law of free falling which was discovered by Galileo, for instance, though has not done anything to the coeval society, has propelled the world into a new stage and made it possible for mordern people to understand the principle behind numerous physical phenomenoms.

Simply put, without these unusual or even idiosyncratic research, the society would find itself as a whole bogged down in the black hole of knowledge deficient. While it is fine for ........

Admittedly, to most of the real scientists, interests played the crucial role in their engagement towards the truth and axiom.

In sum, every scholar has the right to select the research topcis that they are interested in, just like everyone has the right to wear their favoriate dress. All the scientific efforts would benefit the evolution of human society no matter they have been viewed in the contemporary society.
